The phrase “working mother” is redundant

Computer Woes….Again

My computer has quit on me (again). This time it won’t even attempt to turn on. I am at my mom’s just checking on things (e-mail, etc). But I won’t even attempt to upload the pictures of my latest sewing adventures without my precious DSL. So, I will have to wait until mine gets fixed. I just wanted to let everone know that I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth, just off the face of the realm of technology for a spell.   Have a great 4th everyone! I’ll be back soon. (I hope)

Strawberry Pickin’

Oh, the sights of summer. Picking strawberries. I remember picking strawberries with my mom every summer. We don our hats and sunscreen and pick (and eat) until we were exhausted. We would take our haul home, take out the hulls,  wash the berries, and make jam or freeze them for some other mid winter recipe.

Hubby and I took the kids picking last night. I was a little disappointed in the yield and the price ($2.50 a quart). We picked 8 quarts of berries. I’m not sure if we just have had a bad year for strawberries or if we waited too long to go pick them.

This was Nater’s first opportunity to help with the picking (and eating). Last summer I took the kids by myself and Nater played on his blanket while I picked.

This is what he did this year.

The older two have really improved their berry pickin’ skills. Last year, I had to investigate their baskets and weed out a lot of unripe berries. This year, they have discovered which ones to leave on the plants.

Throwing away the hull after a between picking snack…

We finished the evening off with an ice cream supper (the best kind)

This morning I made some strawberry muffins.

Strawberry Muffins

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 egg
1 cup sliced strawberries
3 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons brown sugar

  1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Grease bottoms only of 12 muffin cups or line with baking cups.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder and salt; mix well. In a small bowl, combine milk, oil, egg; blend well. Add dry ingredients all at once; stir just until dry ingredients are moistened (batter will be lumpy.) Fold in strawberries carefully with spoon.
  3. Fill cups 2/3 full. Sprinkle tops of muffins before baking with a combination of 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoon brown sugar.
  4. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 1 minute before removing from pan. Serve warm.

I made some with just strawberries, some with strawberries and chocolate chips and some with just chocolate chips. I quadrupled the basic batter recipe, separated it and then added the fruit and chips.

Next I will be making jam and freezing the remaining strawberries (whole).

I think I am ready to break away from my sewing hiatus. I purchased a new mattress set and haven’t had any major issues with my back since. Hopefully it continues. Anyway, I have a sewing project in the works, so by Tuesday or Wednesday, I should be able to post it.

Introducing…..

The newest member of the family….Hoppy B. Bunny

more affectionately known as just Hoppy. We adopted her yesterday. I had a bunny as a kid, but never new a rabbit to be as friendly as this one. She will climb up into my lap and rest her head on my arm. According to Kim’s Rabbit Hutch, I believe she is a Holland lop. The kids are just crazy about her. At least we think it’s a her. The lady at the pet shop wasn’t quite sure. Hoppy is so full of fur, she couldn’t tell :). Hence, the gender neutral name.

Have a “Hoppy” weekend!

Pincushion Giveaway!

I just entered a pin cushion giveaway over at You Go Girl’s blog. It’s open until next Monday (the 30th). So pop in and leave a comment to enter. If you tell others and they comment saying that you sent them, if they are the winner, you get something too. So increase your chances and tell some friends. I love giveaways, I entered one at Heather Bailey’s site and a few in the past. I haven’t ever won anything, but they’re still fun! I might work up the courage to do one someday. :)

And just for fun… A Blast From the Past!

This is me my senior year, doing what I love best!

(well, at least 8 years ago, it’s what I loved best)

Saturday Morning Thoughts

Although somewhat improving, my back is still bothering me. I am implementing some everyday changes that seem to be helping. I am no longer using a pillow at night. I purchased a straight back rocking chair (no more slumping on the couch :) ). These small changes seem to be working, but I’m still not back at my sewing table. My crocheting project has come a long way though. Hubby is doing some renovating this weekend. Lots of hammering and sawing. Anyone mind if I come visit for the weekend? :)

I do have a great book to keep me occupied while I’m away from the sewing table. I found it at a garage sale this morning for a quarter. It’s called “Let’s Make A Memory”. It was written by Gloria Gaither & Shirley Dobson back in the 1980’s. I checked it out of the library years ago and have been longing for a copying of my very own ever since. It has some fabulous family oriented ideas and activities in it. I would highly recommend it to any family that wants to create lasting memories for their children.

I leave myself with a challenge to make a memory with my family this weekend,

and I challenge you to do the same.

Lack of Accomplishment :(

I didn’t get much of anything accomplished this weekend. Ok, well, we did go camping and I did make massive amounts of goodies for Father’s day. But as far as crafting goes….not so much.

My neck and back have been killing me lately. My neck is stiff, and cracks when I turn it one way or another. My lower backs aches and my arm has that tingling feeling that you get when you lay on it for too long. I think it’s time for a visit to the chiropractor. Any home remedies or advice would be appreciated. I would blame it on sleeping on the ground while camping, but it started way before that. Leaning over the sewing machine isn’t helping, so after about a half hour of piecing a WIP (work in progress) together Saturday morning, I was in so much agony I had to stop. Hopefully, this gets resolved soon.

Parents Cover Photo Contest

I just entered Niyah in Parent’s magazine Cover Photo Contest. I would have entered all three kids, but Alex is too old and Niyah doesn’t get to do much stuff by herself. The whole middle child thing. So I just entered her. I know I am have a very biased opinion, but I think she is absolutely beautiful. You can enter your own kids by visiting Parent’s Magazine website, or if you want to recommend Niyah to be chosen (just click reccommend right above the pictures) (no pressure). This is just something Niyah thought was fun. She loves seeing her picture on the computer. I am trying to help her deal with the feelings that she is experiencing right now. She has just realized that she is the only female child. Hence the new drawing and some acting out. She and Mommy are going to be having some “just girls” days coming up and we are going to enroll her in summer dance class.  I want her to grow up to be a confident women that will make a difference in this world. I think that’s what we all want for our daughters.

This is one of the pictures I chose for the contest

Have You Heard of GoodSearch?

What do you use when you search the internet? Google, yahoo, ….there are so many to choose from. What about a search engine that gave a donation to your favorite charity with every search that you do?  GoodSearch will donate 1 penny per search to a charity of your choice. One penny doesn’t sound like much until you stop and think about how many times you do use a search engine. All you do is go to goodsearch’s homepage. Type in your favorite charity, for example… St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Click verify to see if they are a registered charity. And whenever you do a search, the money will be donated to them. Yeah! It’s so simple. Right now I am alternating my charities between the North Rome Christian School, St. Jude’s and our local Pregnancy Care Center. You really should check it out. www.goodsearch.com

Have a very happy Friday! I am going to be sewing up a storm this weekend and when my camera comes home from Vermont, hopefully I’ll have some lovely things to share.

Oh… and my antique Belvedere Adler sewing machine is a working one!!! I will probably just use it as display, but it’s nice to know that I could use it as a backup if I had too. :)

Homemade Egg Rolls

I let my mom borrow my camera for their weekend trip to Vermont, so I am picture-less for a couple days. But I made the most fabulous egg rolls last night for supper. I got the recipe from Happy to be Called Mommy. Her recipe calls for hot sausage, but because I didn’t have any, our were a vegetarian style. :) I had to fry mine individually, when I tried to do more than one at a time I kept burning them. These will probably be just a once in a while treat, only because they are so time consuming. We served them with some sweet and sour sauce. Hubby and I were just thrilled with them. The kids???….I think the jury’s still out on that one. :)

I hate writing posts with no pictures, so I will leave you with my all time favorite song, I could listen to it all day and never get tired of it. “Mighty to Save” sung by Laura Story.

Everyone needs compassion
A love that’s never failing
Let mercy fall on me
Everyone needs forgiveness
A kindness of a Savior
The hope of nations

Savior
He can move the mountains
My God is Mighty to save
He is Mighty to save
Forever
Author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as You find me
All my fears and failures
Fill my life again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
Now I surrender

Shine your light and let the whole world see
We’re singing for the glory of the risen King…Jesus
